The Wild pepper (Piper sarmentosum) belongs to Piperaceae (the Pepper family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from southern China to Southeast Asia and northeastern India. It grows mainly in humid tropical biomes and reaches a height of about 50 cm. It is a vine that grows along the ground. The leaves are heart-shaped, 7 to 15 cm long, and entire. The surface of the leaves is glossy, with five prominent main veins. It is dioecious. Almost all year round, it produces upright white spadixes 1 to 2 cm long in the leaf axils. The leaves have a pungent pepper-like spiciness and freshness and are used in many dishes in Southeast Asia. In Chinese, it is called "假蒟" (jia ju).
