モチノキ科モチノキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Ilex crenata var. paludosa。英名はありません。
The "Hai-inu-tsuge" (Ilex crenata var. paludosa) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native from Sanin district to the Japan Sea side of Honshu and Hokkaido. It is a variety of "Inu-tsuge" and grows in the mountain bogs of heavy-snow region. The under stems crawl on the grounds and the plant can reach 1-1.5 m in height. The leaves are elliptic, stiff and arranged oppositely. The small white four-petaled flowers bloom on the axils from June to July. It is dioecious. The fruits are round drupes and ripen black.
