Ligustrina japonica)。英名は Japanese tree lilac。
The Japanese tree lilac (Syringa reticulata) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distributed throughout Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and the southern Kuril Islands. This tree grows in forests and can reach 6-7 m in height. The barks are grayish-white and have horizontal elliptic lenticels. The leaves are broad-ovate, entire and opposite. The panicles are borne and bloom numerous small white flowers from June to July. The flowers are aromatic. The prevailing theory regarding the origin of its Japanese name is that it was originally called "Hashi-tsudoi" because the small flowers cluster together at the tips of the branches, and this name was later corrupted into "Hashidoi".
In Korean, it's called "kae-hoe-na-mu" (개회나무) or "teul-jeong-hyang-na-mu" (들정향나무). "kae-hoe-na-mu" is a compound word consisting of "kae" (개) + "Japanese pagoda tree" (hoe-na-mu: 회나무). "kae" is a prefix that indicates something is different or slightly inferior. "teul-jeong-hyang-na-mu" is a compound word consisting of "teul" (들) + "clove" (cheong-hyang-na-mu: 정향나무). "teul" (들) means "growing in a field".
