わが国の固有種で、本州の近畿地方以西から四国・九州に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは１０〜２０メートルになります。樹皮は緑褐灰色で、老木になると鱗状に剥離します。葉は卵形から卵状長楕円形で互生し、鋭い鋸歯と尾状にのびる先端があります。７月ごろ、葉腋から集散花序をだし、淡黄色の花を咲かせます。名前は、この花序につく長楕円形の総苞葉のかたちから。

シナノキ科シナノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Tilia kiusiana。英名はありません。

"Hera-no-ki" (Tilia kiusiana) belongs to Tiliaceae (the Linden family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is an endemic species of Japan. This tree is distributed westward from Kinki district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in the mountains and can reach 10-20 m in height. The barks are greenish-brown gray and furrowed into scaly ridges. The leaves are ovate to ovate-oblong, alternate with acute toothed edges and caudal tips. The cymes are borne at the axiles and bloom pale yellow flowers in July. The inflorescences have oblong bract leaves.
