"Hinoki-asunaro" (Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondae) belongs to Cupressaceae (the Cypress family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from the Oshima Peninsula of Hokkaido south to northern Honshu. The height of tree is about 30 meters. There is almost no difference in appearance from "Asunaro", only in the shape of the cone. This species is called "Hiba" in Aomori Prefecture, and is one of the three most beautiful forests in Japan, as well as Akita cedar and Kiso hinoki (Japanese cypress). It is also called "Ate" in Ishikawa Prefecture, and used as the unlacquered wood of Wajima-nuri (a type of Japanese lacquerware).
