わが国の本州、東北地方から近畿地方、それに四国に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは５〜１０センチになります。葉は卵円形から腎円形で、しばしば表面に雲紋がでます。１１月から３月ごろ、株元に目立たない暗紫褐色の花を咲かせます。萼筒は短い筒形で、萼裂片は卵状三角形です。

ウマノスズクサ科カンアオイ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heterotropa takaoi。英名はありません。

"Hime-kan-aoi" (Heterotropa takaoi) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to southward from Tohoku to Kinki district of Honshu, Shikoku of Japan. This herb grows in montane forests and can reach 5-10 cm in height. The leaves are oval to reniform-round, and have often cloudlike mottles on the surfaces. The dark purplish brown, inconspicuous flowers come on the basis from November to March. The calyx tube is short tubular and the calyx lobe is ovate-triangular.
