わが国の北海道をはじめ、北半球北部に広く分布しています。湿地に生え、高さは10〜20センチになります。地下茎で広がり、茎を叢生させます。茎は円柱形で、直径5ミリほど、表面には細かい溝が縦に走っています。葉は鞘状で、節につきます。6月から8月ごろ、茎頂に長さ2〜3ミリの胞子穂をつけます。 
トクサ科トクサ属の常緑シダ植物で、学名は Equisetum scirpoides。英名は Dwarf scouring rush、Dwarf horsetal。 
The Dwarf scouring rush (Equisetum scirpoides) belongs to Equisetaceae (the Horsetail family). It is an evergreen fern that is widely distributed in northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including Hokkaido in Japan. It grows in wetlands and is 10 to 20 cm tall. It spreads by rhizomes and the stems grow in clusters. The stem is cylindrical, about 5 mm in diameter, with fine furrows running vertically across its surface. The leaves are sheath-like and attached at the nodes. The 2-3 mm long sporangia are produced at the top of the stem from June to August.
