わが国の固有種で、本州の近畿地方以北から神奈川県、それに四国・九州に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは15メートルほどになります。樹皮は淡い赤褐色で平滑、紙状に剥離します。葉は楕円形から長楕円形で互生し、縁には浅い鋸歯があります。5月ごろ、本年枝の葉腋に白色の花を咲かせます。果実は刮ハで5個の稜があります。 
ツバキ科ナツツバキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Stewartia monadelpha。英名はありません。 
"Hime-shara" (Stewartia monadelpha) belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a deciduous tall tree that is native to Japan, northward from Kinki district to Kanagawa prefecture of Honshu, Shokoku and Kyushu of Japan. This tree grows in mountains and can reach about 15 m in height. The barks are pale reddish-brown and peel paper-thinly. The leaves are elliptic to oblong and alternate with slightly toothed edges. The white flowers come in the axiles of new branches in May. The fruits are quinqu-angular capsules.
