わが国の本州、秋田県以南から四国・九州に分布しています。人里近くの日当たりの良い道ばたや墓地、線路沿いなどに生え、高さは3〜8センチになります。葉は三角状披針形で暗緑色、裏面はふつう紫色を帯びます。「すみれ」と異なり、鋸歯が粗く、葉柄の翼はほとんどありません。3月から5月ごろ、紫色の花を咲かせます。側弁の基部には毛が生え、距は淡い色です。 
スミレ科スミレ属の多年草で、学名は Viola confusa ssp. nagasakiensis。英名はありません。 
"Hime-sumire" (Viola confusa ssp. nagasakiensis) belongs to Violaceae (Violet family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Akita Prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. Thhis herb grows on sunny roadsides, cemetery near town or along the railways, and it can reach 3-8 cm in height. The leaves are deltoid-lanceolate, dark green and the abaxial sides are usually tinged purple. They have coarsely toothed edges and wingless petioles, different from "Manchurian violet". The purple flowers bloom from March to May. The lateral petals are beared at the bases and the spurs' color are pale.
