わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国、九州それに台湾や中国、インドシナ半島に分布しています。葉は倒披針形で「やまもも」に似ていますが、古くなると赤く色づいて落葉します。7月から8月ごろ、総状花序をだし白い花を咲かせます。核果は楕円形で「オリーブ」に似ています。名前は「ポルトガルの木」が転訛したとか、「オリーブの木」と誤ったものとかいわれています。 
ホルトノキ科ホルトノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Elaeocarpus syluestris var. ellipticus。英名はありません。 
"Horuto-no-ki" (Elaeocarpus syluestris var. ellipticus) belongs to the Elaeocarpaceae family. It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Kanto region of Honshu west to Shikoku and Kyushu, as well as Taiwan, China and the Indochina Peninsula. The leaves are oblanceolate and esemble "Chinese bayberry". When the leaves become old they will turn red in color and fall apart. The racemes are borne and white flowers bloom from July to August. The drupes are elliptic and resemble "olive". The Japanese name is said that "Portuguese trees" had been corrupted or incorrect as "olive trees".
