Pachypodium brevicaule belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is a deciduous shrub that is native to Madagascar, southward from southern Antananarivo to the Itremo Mountains. This shrub grows in open deciduous forests and can reach about 25 cm in height. The plant is flattened, tuberous and cactus-like with a very low trunk. The bark is colored pale gray and has sometimes shiny. The leaves are glaucous, ovate to obovate. The yellow, up to seven flowers congest and bloom in the inflorescence.
