南ヨーロッパから西アジアが原産です。湿った草地や河岸に生え、高さは４０〜６０センチになります。強い「スペアミント」の芳香があり、ドライフラワーやポプリ、犬のノミ取りに利用されます。８月から１０月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして穂状花序をだし、うす紫色の花を咲かせます。ハーブティーにもされますが、妊娠中は避けた方がいいとのこと。別名で「めぐさはっか（目草薄荷）」とも呼ばれます。

The Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native from southern Europe to West Asia. This herb grows in moist grasslands or stream banks and can reach 40-60 cm in height. The spikes are borne on the stalks and bloom pale purple flowers from August to October. The plant has strong spearmint-like smell and used as a dried flower, potpourri or pulicide. The leaves are also used for herbal tea, though they should not be used by pregnant women.
