南アメリカのコロンビアやエクアドル、ペルーに分布しています。アンデス山脈にある標高１０００〜１７００メートルの雲霧林、流水に近い岩上や樹上に着生し、高さは５０センチほどになります。本種は１９８１年にペルーで発見されましたが、乱獲により絶滅の危機に瀕しているそうです。葉は剣状で長さ１３〜３０センチになります。花茎を伸ばして、先端に１〜６個の花を咲かせます。花は朱色から緋色で、卵形の唇弁は膨らみ、両側に半透明の部分があります。

The Phragmipedium besseae belongs to Orchdaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru in South America. It grows epiphytically on rocks near flowing water or on trees within cloud forests at elevations of 1000 to 1700 m in the Andes Mountains, reaching a height of about 50 cm. This species was discovered in Peru in 1981 but is reportedly facing extinction due to overharvesting. Its leaves are sword-shaped, reaching 13 to 30 cm in length. It extends a flower stalk bearing 1 to 6 flowers at its tip. The flowers range from vermilion to scarlet; the ovate lip is swollen and features translucent sections on both sides.
