アメリカの北東部から中部にかけて分布しています。日当たりの良い河川の砂州や河岸の岩場、断崖などに自生しています。「アメリカてまりしもつけ（アメリカ手毬下野）」という和名があります。５月から６月ごろ、散房花序に白い小さな花をいっぱい咲かせます。花はチョウの密源です。葉は秋には黄緑色に黄葉します。

The Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed throughout the northeastern and central United States. It grows wild on sandbars, riverbank rocks, and cliffs in sunny locations. It has the Japanese name "America-temari-shimotsuke". It produces a corymb full of small white flowers from May to June. The flowers are a dense source of butterflies. The leaves turn yellow-green in fall.
