Pteridium esculentum

The Bracken (Pteridium esculentum) belongs to Dennstaediaceae (the Bracken family). It is a perennial fern that is found in New Zealand, off the coast of Australia and in the Pacific Islands. It grows in lowland to montane areas in forest margins and wastelands. The rhizomes are thick and subterranean, and the fronds are dark green to greenish brown. The sori are linear along the edges of the pinnae. The Maori people used this rhizome as their main food source.
