南アメリカのチリ中部に分布しています。アンデス山地の乾燥した地域に生え、高さは２〜４メートルになります。葉は線形で灰緑色、縁には棘があります。晩春から初夏にかけて、長さ９０センチほどの花序をだし、「りんどう（竜胆）」に似た青緑色の花をいっぱいに咲かせます。花冠の底には芳香のある蜜がたまっています。

パイナップル科プヤ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Puya berteroniana。英名は Blue puya、Aqua sapphire tower。

The Blue puya (Puya berteroniana) belongs to Bromeliaceae (the Pineapple family). It is an evergreen perennial that is distributed in central Chile in South America. It grows in dry areas of the Andes mountains and grows 2 to 4 m tall. The leaves are linear and gray-green with spines on the edges. From late spring to early summer, it produces 90-cm-long inflorescences filled with blue-green flowers similar to those of the "rindo" plant. Aromatic nectar accumulates at the bottom of the corolla.
