「ぽんかん（椪柑）」と「なかきんかん（長金柑）」との属間交雑種です。高さは３〜６メートルになります。葉柄に翼状の付属体がつくのが特徴です。花は白色から紫色を帯び、果実は小さな丸いライムに似ていて、直径はふつう２５〜３５ミリです。熟すと、果肉や果汁は「タンジェリン」のオレンジ色があり、非常に薄いオレンジ色の果皮となります。和名では「しききつ（四季橘）」と呼ばれます。

ミカン科キトロフォルツネラ属の常緑低木で、学名は X Citrofortunella microcarpa。英名は Calamondin orange、Calamansi。

The calamondin orange (X Citrofortunella microcarpa) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small evergreen tree that is an intergeneric hybrid between the mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) and the oval kumquat (Fortunella margarita). This tree grows up to 3-6 m in height. The plant is characterized by wing-like appendages on the leaf petioles. The flowers are white or purplish, the fruit resembles a small, round lime, usually 25-35 mm in diameter. The center pulp and juice is the orange color of a tangerine with a very thin orange peel when ripe.
