アジアからヨーロッパの温帯地域に広く分布しています。わが国や北アメリカにも帰化していて、とくに長野県では古くから知られ、「ちくまはっか(筑摩薄荷)」とも呼ばれます。高さは40〜100センチになり、茎や葉は細毛に被われて灰緑色に見えます。6月から8月ごろ、赤紫色の斑点のある白い花を咲かせます。ハーブティーやネコのおもちゃなどに利用されます。 
シソ科イヌハッカ属の多年草で、学名は Nepeta cataria。英名は Catnip。 
The catnip (Nepeta cataria) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed widely, from Asia to Europe. This herb is also naturalized in Japan and North America. It can reach 40-100 cm in height, the leaves and stems are covered with grayish fine hairs. The white labiate flowers with magenta mottles come from June to August. The plant is used to herbal tea or cat's toy.
