イランおよびコーカサス地方が原産です。群生し、ふつう高さは６０〜７５センチになります。根生葉は羽状に深裂し、表面は濃緑色で、裏面には白い毛が生えます。５月から６月ごろ、茎頂に「やぐるまぎく」に似た、ふじ色から赤紫色の頭花を咲かせます。個々の頭花には、目立つ総苞片があります。

キク科ヤグルマギク属の多年草で、学名は Centaurea dealbata。英名は Persian cornflower、Whitewash cornflower。

The Persian cornflower (Centaurea dealbata) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to Iran and the Caucasus. It is a clump-forming perennial that typically grows to 60-75 cm tall. The basal leaves are pinnately-lobed and dark green above with whitish hairs underneath. From May to June, the cornflower-like, lavender to rosy pink flower-heads bloom atop stems. Each flower-head has distinctive involucre bracts.
