Cephalophyllum alstonii belongs to the family Aizoaceae (the Ice plant family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the Ceres Karoo of Western Cape where is the winter-rainfall area. This herb is a creeping succulent. The leaves are triangular, about 6-12 cm long, greenish, erect, and the surface is smooth throughout. The large blood-red flowers bloom in winter (June to September).
