Galium megalospermum belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is an annual or a biennial herb that is native to the Alps and the Maritime Alps. This herb grows in sub-apline to alpine screes and can reach 5-10 cm in height, and spread out carpet-like. The leaves are broad oblanceolate to narrow obovate and whorled. The corymbs are borne and bloom small yellowish-white flowers in summer. The genus Galium is derived from Greek "gala" (milk), and the species was used for clabbering milk for making cheese in ancient days.
