The Haleakala silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an evergreen herb that is grows naturally on Maui Island in the Hawaiian Islands, at an altitude of 2100-3750 m on Mt. Haleakala, near its volcanic ash and crater. In Hawaiian, it is called "Ahinahina". The leaves are silver-gray and shaped like a sword. The flower stalk grows from 1.2-1.8 m and blooms from May to September. It is a plant that has survived for about 50 years, but it will die if it bears fruit after flowering. The top to 6th photos are the 13th year seedling that first bloomed in Japan.
