The cross-berry (Grewia occidentalis) belongs to Tiliaceae (the Linden family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from the Western Cape region of South Africa to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. This tree grows from the shrub belts of coastal dunes to mountain forests and grasslands, and can reach about 3 m in height. The leaves are long-ovate, alternate, and with odontophyllus edges. They stand out three veins from the base. The star-shaped flowers with a diameter of 1.5-3 cm bloom in the summer (October to January). The flower has 5 purple petals, and even slightly long calyx lobes look like petals. The fruit has four ridges and changes from reddish brown to light purple when ripe.
