中国の中北部から北部、東北部に分布する「じおう(地黄)」の一品種です。山地の斜面や小道のそばに生え、高さは20〜40センチになります。葉は長楕円形で根生し、裏面は紫色を帯びます。6月から7月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして総状花序をだし、淡い紅紫色の筒状花を咲かせます。根茎は地黄(じおう)と呼ばれ、漢方薬として利用されます。中国名は「懐慶地黄(Huaiqing di huang)」です。
ゴマノハグサ科ジオウ属の多年草で、学名は Rehmannia glutinosa f. hueichingensis。英名は Chinese foxglove。
The Chinese foxglove (Rehmannia glutinosa f. hueichingensis) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is native to mid-northern, northern and north-eastern China. This herb grows in mountain slopes and trailsides, and can reach 20-40 cm in height. The leaves are oblong and basal with purple tinged beneath. The racemes are borne on the flowering stalks and bloom pale magenta tubular flowers from June to July. The rootstocks have the name 'Di huang' and are used as a traditional Chinese medicine.
