わが国の本州、宮城県以南から四国・九州それに沖縄に分布しています。桿は紫黒色を帯び、高さは1〜3メートルになります。広く庭園用として植栽されています。披針形の葉は洋紙質で薄く、互生します。和名は、秋から初冬にかけてタケノコが出ることから。材は和風建築や工芸品に利用されます。 
イネ科カンチク属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Chimonobambusa marmorea。英名はありません。 
"Kan-chiku" (Chimonobambusa marmorea) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bumboo that is distributed from Miyagi Prefecture of Honshu southward to Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa in Japan. The culm is purple-black in color and grows 1 to 3 m tall. It is widely planted for gardens. The lanceolate leaves are papery, thin, and alternate. The Japanese name comes from the bamboo shoots that appear in fall and early winter. The wood is used for Japanese-style architecture and crafts.
