カナダ東部とアメリカのアパラチア地方が原産です。自生地では高さが25メートルほどになりますが、都会では7〜8メートルの高さにしかなりません。樹冠は円錐形です。樹皮は若木では灰褐色ですが、老木になると赤褐色になり広い割れ目ができます。濃い緑色の葉は線形で、下面に2本の白い気孔のラインがあります。5月から6月ごろ、黄色い雄花と淡い緑色の雌花をつけます。球果は卵形で、秋に熟します。 
マツ科ツガ属の常緑高木で、学名は Tsuga canadensis。英名は Canadian hemlock、Eastern hemlock。 
The Canadian hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to eastern Canada and the Appalachia region in the United States. This tree grows up about 25 m in height its native habitat, but in the city it is only 7-8 m in height. The canopy is conical. The bark of young trees is grayish brown, but old trees turn reddish brown and have wide cracks. The dark green leaves are linear with two white stomatal lines on the underside. It bears yellow male flowers and pale green female flowers from May to June. The cones are ovate and ripen in the fall.
