北アメリカが原産です。わが国へは、明治時代以降に観賞用として渡来しました。現在では各地に帰化しています。道ばたなどに生え、高さは１メートル以上になります。全体に軟毛が密生します。８月から９月ごろ、芳香のある漏斗形の花を上向きに咲かせます。花冠は外側が淡いふじ色、内側が白色です。果実は蒴果で、多くの棘で被われます。別名で「アメリカちょうせんあさがお（アメリカ朝鮮朝顔）」とも呼ばれます。
ナス科チョウセンアサガオ属の一年草で、学名は Datura innoxia。英名は Downy thorn apple、Sacred datura。
The Downy thorn apple (Datura innoxia) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is an annual herb that is native to North America. It was introduced into Japan as an ornamental plant in Meiji Era (1868-1912) or later. Nowadays, it is naturalized in so many places. This herb grows on roadsides and can reach up to 1 m in height. The plant is covered with soft hairs. The fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers bloom upward from August to September. The outer side of corolla is pale mauve and the inner side is white. The fruits are capsules and covered with many thorns.
