Tragopogon pratensis

The Goat's beard (Tragopogon pratensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe from the Mediterranean coast to the west. It grows in moist meadows and along roadsides, and is 60 to 70 cm tall. It was introduced to Japan at the beginning of the Meiji period (about 150 years ago) and has become naturalized in many places. Yellow flower heads bloom at the top of the stem from May to July. The rhizome is called "black salsify" and is edible in Europe and the United States. It is also known as "婆羅門菊" (Baramon-giku) or "黄花の婆羅門参" (Kibanano-baramon-jin) in Japan.
