熱帯アジアが原産です。湿ったところに生え、高さは２０～６０メートルになります。幹は真っ直ぐで、多くの円錐形の棘が生えでいます。これは若いときに顕著に見られ、古くなると腐食してしまいます。葉は掌状の６出複葉です。花は赤色の５弁花で、春に新葉が出る前に咲きます。成熟すると蒴果ができ、中には棉に似た白色の繊維が詰まっています。この繊維は、枕や布団の詰め物として利用されます。

パンヤ科キワタ属の落葉高木で、学名は Bombax ceiba。英名は Cotton tree。

The cotton tree (Bombax ceiba) belongs to the family Bombacaceae. It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to tropical Asia. This tree grows in wet places and up a height of 20-60 m. The trunk is straight and bears numerous conical spines particularly when young, but get eroded when older. The leaves are palmate with about 6 leaflets. The red flowers with 5 petals appear in the spring before the new foliage. It produces a capsule which, when ripe, contains white fibers like cotton. This fibers are used as a filling of pillow and bedding.
