"Kogome-hyotan-boku" (Lonicera linderifolia var. konoi) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan and is distributed in the Yatsugatake and Southern Alps in central Honshu. It grows in mountainous areas and grows to about 1 m in height. It is well branched, and the young branches are purplish brown in color. The leaves are broadly elliptic, opposite, and entire. 2 small dark reddish-purple flowers bloom in the axils of the leaves at the ends of the branches from May to June. The fruits are berries that ripen to red in August. They do not connate. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the leaves are figuratively small like small rice.
