わが国の本州、山梨県と長野県南部に分布しています。山地の林縁や伐採地に生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は幅が４〜７センチの卵形から狭卵形で、柄があり対生します。「いぬやまはっか」の変種ですが、葉が幅広いのが特徴です。９月から１０月ごろ、枝先の総状花序に青紫色の花を咲かせます。上唇は浅く４裂して反り返り、下唇は舟形です。

シソ科ヤマハッカ属の多年草で、学名は Rabdosia umbrosa var. latifolia。英名はありません。

"Koushin-yamahakka" (Rabdosia umbrosa var. latifolia) belongs to Labiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Yamanashi and southern Nagano prefecture of Honshu, Japan. This herb grows in montane forest edges or logging areas and can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are ovate to narrow-ovate 4-7 cm across, alternate and petiolated. The racemes are borne on the terminal branches and bloom bluish-purple flowers from September to October. The upper lip is divided into shallowly 4 lobes and recurving, and the lower lip is boat-shaped.
