The "Kuju-azami" (Cirsium kujuense) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and is found in the Kuju Mountain Range and Mt. Sobosan in northern Kyushu. It grows in cool-temperate grasslands and reaches a height of 50 to 100 cm. Its leaves are deeply pinnately lobed, and a distinctive feature is that the basal leaves remain even during the flowering period. From September to November, it produces purple capitula that bloom slightly downward at the stem tips. The involucre is covered with cobweb-like hairs and has a sticky texture.
