南アジアからインドに分布しています。根茎は掌状で、「ばしょう(芭蕉)」に似た葉を出します。葉の裏に、ビロードのような繊毛があるのが特徴です。高さは120〜150センチになります。春に円筒形の花序をだし、黄色い花を咲かせます。苞葉は淡いピンク色です。根茎には強い苦味と辛味があり、健胃薬や食用香料に使われます。別名で「はるうこん(春鬱金)」とも呼ばれます。
ショウガ科ウコン属の多年草で、学名は Curcuma aromatica。英名は Wild turmeric、Aromatic turmeric。
The wild turmeric (Curcuma aromatica) belongs to Zingiberaceae (the Ginger family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South Asia and India. The rhizome is palmately, and comes out the Japanese banana like leaves. It is defined that the rear surfaces of leaves are covered with velvety hairs. This herb can reach about 120-150 cm in height. The cylindrical cluster is borne and the yellow flowers bloom in spring. The bracts are pale pink. The rhizomes have strong bitter taste and pungent flavor, and are used as a herbal medicines to treat stomach and as a food flavor.
