北アメリカの東・中部が原産です。岩石の多い森や茂みなどの生え、高さは1メートル以上になります。わが国へは、昭和時代の初めに帰化が確認され、現在では各地に広がっています。葉は卵形で対生し、長い柄と縁には粗い鋸歯があります。7月から10月ごろ、散房花序に白色の頭花を咲かせます。ひとつの頭花に筒状花が14個以上もあるのが特徴です。
キク科ヒヨドリバナ属の多年草で、学名は Eupatorium rugosum。英名は White snakeroot。
The white snakeroot (Eupatorium rugosum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern and central North America. This herb grows in rocky woods and thickets, and can reach up to 1 m. It was confirmed to naturalize in Japan in the early Showa Era (about 80 years ago) and spreads over land now. The leaves are ovate and opposite with long petioles and coarsely-toothed margins. The white flower heads bloom in the corymbs from July to October. It is defined that th tubular flowers are up to 14 per flower head.
