中国の南部から東南アジアに分布しています。高さは２メートルほどになります。大きな特徴は、葉が３小葉からなり、そのうちの側小葉が音に反応して上下運動をすることです。「踊る植物」として話題を呼びました。秋に、茎の先端または上部の葉腋に総状花序をつけ、淡黄色の蝶形花を咲かせます。

マメ科ヌスビトハギ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Desmodium motorium。英名は Telegraph plant。

The telegraph plant (Desmodium motorium) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from southern China to Southeast Asia. This shrub grows up to a height of about 2 m. A major feature is that the leaves consist of 3 leaflets, of which the lateral leaflets move up and down in response to sound. This plant was once talked about as a "dancing plant". The racemes are borne on the tips or upper axils of the stems and bloom pale yellow butterfly-shaped flowers in fall.
