わが国の八重山諸島、石垣島および西表島、それに台湾に分布しています。森林にある渓流沿いの岩の上に生え、高さは３０〜４０センチになります。根茎は横に這い、ところどころから茎を出します。葉は左右非対称な心形で、縁には大きな粗い鋸歯があり、さらに細かい鋸歯があります。集散花序にピンク色の花を咲かせます。雄花と雌花があります。台湾華語では「水鴨腳」と呼ばれます。

シュウカイドウ科シュウカイドウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Begonia formosana (syn. Begonia lacinata var. formosana)。英名は Formosana begonia。

The Formosana begonia (Begonia formosana) belongs to Begoniaceae (the Begonia family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed to Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands in the Yaeyama Islands, and Taiwan. It grows on rocks along streams in forests and is 30-40 cm tall. The rhizome creeps horizontally, and stems emerge from places. The leaves are asymmetrical, heart-shaped, with large coarse serrations on the margins and even finer serrations. It produces pink flowers in cymes. There are male and female flowers. It is called "水鴨腳" in Taiwanese Chinese.
