わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに四国の石立山に分布しています。亜高山帯の湿った草地や岩場に生え、高さは５〜１５センチになります。母種となる Pinguicula vulgaris は、北半球のヨーロッパからユーラシア大陸に広く分布しています。葉は長楕円形で長さ３〜５センチ、無柄です。葉には腺毛が密生していて、粘液を出して小さな虫を捕えて消化します。夏に分枝しない花茎を伸ばして、淡紫色の花を咲かせます。

The Japanese common butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris var. macroceras) belongs to Lentibulariaceae (the Bladderwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Chubu district of Honshu north to Hokkaido and Mt. Ishitate in Shikoku in Japan. This herb grows in moist grasslands and rocky areas in the subalpine zone, and is 5 to 15 cm in height. The mother species "Pinguicula vulgaris" is widely distributed from Europe in the northern hemisphere to the Eurasian continent. The leaves are oblong and 3-5 cm in length and sessile. The leaves are densely packed with glandular hairs that shed mucus to trap and digest small insects. The unbranched flower stalks are stretched to bloom pale purple flowers in the summer.
