"Naeba-ki-sumire" (Viola brevistipulata var. kishidai) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Joetsu region to the southern Tohoku region in Honshu, Japan. It is a variant of the "Ooba-kisumire" and grows in sandy and gravelly areas in mountainous to subalpine zones. The heart-shaped leaves are thick and glossy, and the stems are reddish-purple. The Japanese name is derived from Mt. Naeba on the border between Niigata and Nagano prefectures, where the type specimen is grown.
