わが国の本州、東海地方以西から四国・九州に分布しています。山地に生え、あまり大きくはなりません。蔓は右巻き、葉は奇数羽状複葉です。小葉は卵形または長卵形で5〜7対あります。7月から8月ごろ、本年枝の葉腋から総状花序を出して、淡いクリーム色の蝶形花を咲かせます。果実は豆果で、紫褐色に熟します。 
マメ科ナツフジ属の落葉蔓性木本で、学名は Millettia japonica。英名は Japanese millettia。 
The Japanese millettia (Millettia japonica) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a deciduous woody vine that is distributed from Tokai region of Honshu west to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This vine grows in the mountains and does not grow very large. The vines are right-handed and the leaves are odd pinnate compound. The leaflets are ovate or long-ovate with 5-7 pairs. The racemes are borne on the axils of this year's branches and bloom pale cream-colored butterfly-shaped flowers from July to August. The fruits are legumes and ripen purple-brown.
