"Nankin-nana-kamado" (Sorbus gracilis) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan and distributed from Kanto district of Honshu west to Shikoku and Kyushu. The tree grows in mountains and can reach 1-3 m in height. The leaves are impari-pinnate with 3-5 pairs of elliptic to oblong leaflets. They are obtuse serrated on the upper part of edges. The pale white-yellow flowers bloom in the terminal compound corymbs in May. The fruits are pomes and ripen red in September and October. The name "Nankin" means "small", not Nanking in China. It is also called "Kobano-nanakamado" by another name.
