The "Nangoku-narai-shida" (Arachniodes miqueliana) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed across Japan, from the southern part of the Tohoku region on Honshu to Shikoku and the northern and central parts of Kyushu, as well as on the Korean Peninsula and in China. It grows in the shaded, damp forest understory of mountainous areas and reaches a height of 30 to 60 cm. The rhizome is long, creeping, and spreading. The leaves are pentagonal, ranging from green to dark green, and are either three- or four-pinnate. The first downward-pointing leaflet of the lowest pinna is well-developed. The surface of the rachis is densely covered with needle-like hairs. The spori are large and round, located near the notches of the lobes. It is called "毛枝蕨" (mao zhi jue) in Chinese.
