わが国では対馬列島にだけ分布しています。大陸性の「すみれ」で主に朝鮮半島から中国東北部、シベリアに分布しています。山地の林床や林縁に生え、高さは10センチほどです。葉は3〜5裂し、裂片には細かい切れ込みがあります。3月から4月ごろ、白色から淡紅紫色の花を咲かせます。中国語では「南山菫菜(nan shan jin cai)」と呼ばれます。 
スミレ科スミレ属の多年草で、学名は Viola chaerophylloides var. chaerophylloides。英名はありません。 
"Nanzan-sumire" (Viola chaerophylloides var. chaerophylloides) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed only in the Tsushima Islands in Japan. It is a continental violet, distributed mainly from the Korean Peninsula to northeastern China and Siberia. It grows on forest floors and forest edges in mountainous areas and is about 10 cm tall. It produces white to pale reddish-purple flowers from March to April. It is called "南山菫菜" (nan shan jin cai) in Chinese.
