わが国の西表島・石垣島以南から東南アジアに広く分布しています。日当たりの良い草原に生え、高さは５０センチほどになります。茎や葉は「よし」に似ています。５月から１２月ごろ、薄紫色の「カトレア」に似た花を咲かせます。和名は、西表島の成屋に因みます。

ラン科ナリヤラン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Arundina graminifolia。英名は Bamboo orchid。

Bamboo orchid (Arundina graminifolia) belongs to the Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed widely from Iriomote and Ishigaki Island of Japan south to Southeast Asia. This herb grows in the sunny grasslands and can reach about 50 cm in height. The stem and leaves look like a reed. Pale purple cattleya like flowers come in May to December.
