わが国の九州、宮崎県と長崎県対馬に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは１０〜２０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で波状の鋸歯があり、中肋沿いに白斑があります。雌雄異株です。１０月から４月ごろ、集散花序に小さな花を咲かせます。雄花は白色、雌花は淡黄緑色です。果実は赤色で卵形の痩果です。

イラクサ科サンショウソウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Pellionia yoshiei。英名はありません。

"Nagaba-sansho-so" (Pellionia yoshiei) belongs to Urticaceae (the Nettle family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Kyushu in Japan, Miyazaki prefecture and the Tsushima Islands in Nagasaki prefecture. This herb grows in montane forests and it can reach 10-20 cm in height. The leaves are oblong with wavy serration, and have white mottles along rachises. It is dioecious. The small flowers bloom in cymes from October to April. Male flowers are white and female flowers are pale yellowish-green. The fruits are red ovate achenes.
