わが国の本州、神奈川県以西から四国・九州それに朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは５〜８メートルになります。樹皮は暗褐色で波状の縞模様になります。葉は長楕円形で互生し、先端が尾状に尖ります。５月から６月ごろ、葉腋に小さな黄緑色の花を咲かせます。果実は長楕円形の核果で、ネコの乳首のようなかたちをしています。

クロウメモドキ科ネコノチチ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Rhamnella franguloides。英名はありません。

"Neko-no-chichi" (Rhamnella franguloides) belongs to Rhamnaceae (the Buckthorn family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distributed westward from Kanagawa prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows in montane forests and can reach 5-8 m in height. The barks are dark brown and wavy striped pattern. The leaves are oblong and alternate with caudal tips. The small yellowish-green flowers come in the axiles from May to June. The fruits are oblong drupes and resemble to cat's nipples.
