にちにちそう (日日草)

インド洋のマダガスカルやモーリシャスが原産です。高温や強い日差し、乾燥などに強く、高さは６０センチほどになります。最近では矮性の改良品種が出回っています。葉は楕円形で光沢があります。５月から１０月ごろまで、ピンクや白色、赤紫色の花を咲かせます。わが国では、春まきの一年草として扱われています。古くから民間薬に使われ、含有されるビンカアルカロイドには抗腫瘍作用があります。

キョウチクトウ科ニチニチソウ属の多年草で、学名は Catharanthus roseus。英名は Vinca, Madagascar periwinkle。

The vinca (Catharanthus roseus) belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Madagascar and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It is resistant to high temperatures, strong sunlight, and dryness, and can reach a height of about 60 cm. Recently, improved dwarf varieties are on the market. The leaves are ovate and shiny. The pink, white and magenta flowers come in bloom from May to October. In Japan, it is treated as an annual spring plant. Vinca alkaloids, which have been used in folk medicine for a long time, have antitumor effects.
