Sasa nikkoensis

"Nikko-zasa" (Sasa nikkoensis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a "Sasa" (dwarf shrubby grass) that is distributed all over Japan. It grows in the mountains and the height of the culm is 50 to 100 cm. The leaves are oblong and have fine hairs on the surface. Similar to "Kuma bamboo grass" (Sasa veitchii), the area around the leaves is whitened in winter. It is also characterized by downward hair on the knots. The Japanese name comes from the discovery by Dr. Tomitaro Makino in Nikko.
