わが国の各地をはじめ、アジアの温帯から亜熱帯、ヨーロッパに分布しています。道端や荒れ地、草原などに生え、高さは５〜２５センチになります。根もとからよく分枝して、全体に短い毛があります。葉は、広卵形から狭卵形で対生します。３月から６月、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。花弁は５個、花柱は３個あります。和名は、小さな葉を「のみ（蚤）」の短衣に喩えたもと。台湾華語では「無心菜」、中国語では「無心菜（wu xin cai）」と呼ばれます。

The Thyme leaf sandwort (Arenaria serpyllifolia) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a biennial herb that is distributed in Japan, as well as the temperate and the sub-tropical areas of Asia and Europe. This herb grwos in roadsides, wasteland or grasslands and can reach 5-25 cm in height. The leaves are broad-ovate to narrow-ovate and opposite. The small white flowers appear from March to June. The flowers have five petals and three styles. The Japanese name is based on the metaphor of the small leaves as the short robe of a flea. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "無心菜", and "無心菜" (wu xin cai) in Chinese.
