The Rauwolfia paraensis belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is an evergreen shrub that is widely distributed in the Amazon River basin in South America. The leaves are ovate and shiny, opposite or arranged in whorls. The inflorescences are borne on the axils and bloom white tubular flowers. The tip of the corolla splits into five. It contains alkaloids and is toxic, but the pulp is said to be edible.
