The "Rinboku" (Prunus spinulosa) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed westward from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu, the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, as well as Taiwan and southern China. This tree grows in motane dales and can reach 10-15 m in height. The barks are bluckkish-brown with horizontal long lenticels, and they peel thinly when aging. The leaves are oblong and alternate with wavy edges. The racemes are borne on the axiles and bloom many small white flowers from September to October. The fruits are elliptic drupes and ripen bluckiish-purple in next early summer. the timber is used for equipment or fuelwood. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "刺葉桂櫻" and "細葉稠李" (xi chi chou li) in Chinese.
